Priorities and Why We Need Them

Lack of established priorities can be devastating and debilitating to a business at any stage. You probably believe the cause of this chaos when everything is urgent is because your business is unique or faces a unique set of obstacles, you’re developing a new market, or you don’t have the resources to operate like a more established business. It is common for us entrepreneurs to blame the chaos on others, the lack of money, the lack of resources, the lack of a defined market, or one of the many other excuses for not fixing the chaos.

“Setting priorities is the first and foundational step.”

Way To Think Differently

Here’s what it comes down to:

  • Why is there too much to do?  Because you need to set the priorities and align your resources to those priorities.
  • Why do you not have  established priorities? Because you need to understand how a company that has to do everything, can still prioritize one thing over another.

Think about it. Every business, whether it’s Coca-Cola or a new startup, has more to do than they have time for. Everyone has to figure out what comes first, second, third, or what can’t be done. Would anyone from corporate America have a job if they had a “we need to do everything” mentality? Entrepreneurs fail to see this.

With limited resources, you must decide your organization’s top priorities and then align your available resources to them. Does that mean that you neglect the rest of your business? Of course not. It means that when you set your priorities, you treat them distinctly and with more focus and energy than other activities. In order to make progress, these top priorities require your best thought. Never underestimate the benefit of prioritizing. It could be the difference between success and failure.
