WHAT YOU FEEL: What do I do with these emotions as a new entrepreneur? Why do we develop these damaging perspectives?

PERSPECTIVE:

Because we are under the influence of the “Four Ps” of being the entrepreneur—Pressure, Passion, Pleasure and Pain. You are the entrepreneur. You get to be president. You get to write off your expenses. You get to set your hours. You get to pursue your passion. You also get an unlimited pass on a perpetual rollercoaster. Being an entrepreneur is exhilarating, humbling, challenging, inspiring, mind-numbing, nerve-racking, exciting, life changing, exasperating, maddening, irritating, encouraging, discouraging, exhausting, motivating, debilitating, exciting, tiring, energizing, empowering, disheartening, uplifting, depressing and enlivening—usually all in the same day!

Once you have made the decision to be an entrepreneur, it is as if you have stepped into a telephone booth to turn into a superhero. The difference between an entrepreneur and a normal superhero is this—normal superheroes possess one or two amazing skills (e.g., Superman can fly and has x-ray vision, Spiderman can leap tall building and spin a spider web). But the entrepreneur must possess an almost endless set of skills. Imagine if there were a superhero that could do all of it. Well, that superhero is you—the entrepreneur—and you possess traits that are not found in mere mortals:
  • Vision—the ability to see an opportunity where others cannot.
  • Courage—the guts to leave stability, or comfort or normalcy, to take a risk.
  • Passion—a desire to not settle for the status quo and create your own idea.
  • Creativity—the talent to see solutions where others see roadblocks.
  • Individualism—the independence of spirit to take an idea and run with it.
  • Belief—the ability to believe when many tell you not to believe.
  • Grit—firmness of mind or spirit and unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.
