In the chaotic world of entrepreneurship, it is rare that entrepreneurs assess how they work, and how they organize and execute their days. We are often running from fire to fire and donโ€™t think about the ways we can be more efficient, more balanced, more rested and more effective. Many entrepreneurs, wear this frenetic pace like a badge of honor. In an environment with so many moving parts, you would think that we would be looking for ways to get more organized and structured. Quite the contrary. Entrepreneurs just go and go and go and donโ€™t have time to think about how to better manage themselves.

Say to an entrepreneur, โ€œYou have to sleep moreโ€ and they scoff. Say to an entrepreneur, โ€œYou should turn off your phoneโ€ and they think you have escaped from an insane asylum. For some reason, entrepreneurs embrace the consistent shunning of their own personal well-being and lives. Unfortunately, while this may feel like initiation dues into the club, it ends up making you less efficient and effective.

Rule #1:ย You must sleep. It is impossible to maximize your time, potentialย and brain power unless you sleep. I know what you are sayingย to yourself, โ€œWho has time to sleep?โ€ Not sleeping is the same asย not protecting an asset of the company. If your vision was to makeย widgets, and you had a killer widget machine, wouldnโ€™t you makeย sure it had fuel and was properly oiled? It is hard to get sleep everyย day when you are the entrepreneur but you must. Here are a fewย suggestions.

โ€ข Eight hours once per week. One day per weekโ€”preferablyย in the middle of the weekโ€”get eight hours of sleep. After theย financial crisis of 2008, I was working twenty hours per day, butย every Wednesday I went to bed at 10 p.m. and got eight hours.ย Made a world of difference.

โ€ข Take daily naps. Each day close your eyes for thirty minutes.ย No more than thirty minutes. Any longer and you run the riskย of developing โ€œsleep inertiaโ€โ€”that groggy feeling that takes aย considerable amount of time to shake off. Power naps not onlyย alleviate sleep deficits, but they boost our brains, including creativeย problem solving, verbal memory, and perceptual object andย statistical learning. Napping improves our mood and feelings ofย fatigue, is good for our heart, blood pressure, stress levels, andย surprisingly, even weight. โ€œWhere am I going to nap, you ask?ย Be creative. Under your desk, in your car, in the park, on yourย lunch break. One entrepreneur said that he would doze off in aย bathroom stall when the hours got extra-long. You donโ€™t haveย to go that far, but make a plan for a short break. Youโ€™ll feel theย improvement in everything you do.

โ€ข Hitting the pillow means sleep. When you put your headย on the pillow at night, donโ€™t waste time thinking about problemsย you canโ€™t fix at that moment. When you are lying in bed,ย there is nothing you can do about your companyโ€™s issues. Onceย you decide to sleep, donโ€™t think about the business. Find yourย version of counting sheep. I used to let my mind wander to a college baseball game or to a childhood memory. Regardless ofย your version of the strategy, make the commitment that once youย put your head on the pillow, you are not going to waste time onย things you canโ€™t impact.
