Hiring Freelancers to Advance Your Business
There will be a day when you have a full staff of employees. But as you are building your company from the ground up, you have to make the most of every dollar you have. One of the ways you can do this is to take advantage of the vast network of freelancers – both in the United States and throughout the world – to help you with various parts of your business. Freelancers can supplement your growth by providing various resources on an “as needed” basis without the need to hire full time employees.

Areas to Consider Freelancers
Hereโs a guide on when, where and how to use freelancers for your startup.
- Accounting.even though you may not know anything about accounting, you need to be able to keep your fingers on the pulse of the business. An efficient way to do that is with a freelance accountant. A freelance accountant will give you one-on-one time. You donโt want a big accounting firm managing your startup. What you want is a freelance accountant, who will be on your call 24/7. For this function, you also want to have this person local so you can meet and interact. This is one place where freelancing sites arenโt that great. However, you can find accountants by:
- Asking other entrepreneurs
- Posting questions on accounting forums
- Posting a listing on job sites
- Facebook groups related to entrepreneurship and accounting
- Reading finance blogs and interacting with other visitors
- Marketing.ย Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) are great tools with the right expert. If you are a startup, hire a single freelancer as opposed to a firm. You will get more bang for your buck. If thereโs any place you want to spend a little more, this is it. Thatโs because there are just so many phony individuals in this niche. Everybody says they are an SEO expert nowadays. Make sure you set goals for your expert and make sure his pay is conditioned by achieving those goals. Donโt be fooled into hiring โsocial media expertsโ or โmarket research expertsโ. Thatโs basically all hype. Do all the social media management on your own. There are tons of tutorials out there on how to manage your Facebook, your Twitter, your Pinterest and every other profile. Try to read as many of them as possible and then get to work.
- Design.ย From logo creation to website design, to banners and flyers, your companyโs image really makes a difference. Make sure your freelance designer knows a bit of coding. Great designers usually do. You want a design which is easy to implement, not just something which looks great.
- Coding.ย For coding you want a firm as opposed to an individual. Great coders are usually very reluctant to interact with people. Thatโs why you want a freelance firm. More and more companies are enlisting their services on freelance websites. But if you can, work with a local company for the coding part. It will be easier to push them in the direction youโre wanting. Another crucial reason you want a company, and not a freelance coder is the fact that you need an interface between you and the programmer. You need someone to put some pressure on the coder every now and then. A firm is just safer.
- Analytics.ย Hereโs one youโll want to handle on your own. Donโt hire anyone for this. You need to know what CPM, CPC, funnels, bounce-rates and all that other weird gibberish means.
- Newsletters (Writing).ย If youโre a startup relying on sales via theย Internet, collecting and maintaining an e-mail list is the absolute way to grow. Creating the newsletter then becomes a high priority task. Either daily, weekly or monthly, you need to take the time and create a newsletter from scratch each time you send out an email to your subscribers. There are some great freelancers out there who can work for you on this one. But they charge a lot. Thatโs not the way to go if youโre just starting out. This is one you an handle.
- Blogging.ย Hire a blogger. Great content and can sell ice to eskimos.
- Customer Care.ย Don’t feeelance this. It is too close to your relationship with your customer. Instead of freelancing, find a local resource and bring them in. You want a local employee, whom you can supervise.
Considerations For Hiring a Freelancer
Hiring a freelance contractor is a great way to save time and money. However, because the freelance marketplaces across the globe are filled with freelance contractors all bidding for a limited amount of jobs, you might get flooded with a large number of proposals for a given job. And the mix between price and quality is skewed due to the difference in the value of money in different places throughout the world. How are you to know which freelancer is the right contractor to hire?
Here are a few things to consider when hiring a freelancer.
- Check The Freelancerโs Portfolio.ย Before comparing prices, youโve got to know if the freelancer can deliver. The only way you can legitimately do this is by seeing a portfolio of work. If the freelancer has provided some links to some online examples of their work, great; however if you feel you need to see some more, donโt hesitate to ask. If the freelancer is indeed keen on working for you, this should be no problem for them. If they resist, you know what you need to know.
- Communication Frequency And Medium.ย Set the ground rules for communication with your freelancer. Whether itโs by Skype, email, or a weekly phone call, you need to be comfortable with the communication frequency and medium prior to starting any job. Often youโll be working with freelancers who are not in your location. It is important to set up time and method where your freelancer and you can communicate freely. Most freelancers are very accommodating and may have solutions to your problems, particularly those they have experienced with prior clients.
- Donโt Automatically Pick The Cheapest Contractor.ย It can be so tempting to pick the cheapest option when selecting a freelancer but this can more often than not lead to disaster. Itโs not to say that each and every time, picking the cheapest contractor wonโt work out, but be careful when considering an entry-level price point contractor as you do get what you pay for when hiring freelancers. You are far better off choosing based on expertise and experience than price point, because generally you will be doing well financially regardless of your choice.
- Ask For References.ย Ask the freelancers for several references and also to speak with some clients. Don’t rely only on online written references.
- Get A Team Player.ย This can be a little tricky to determine, but if this is a requirement for you, i.e. your freelancer needs to interact with various members of your team, across complex items, then simply ask them. At the very least this will indicate to the freelancer that teamwork is important or a vital element to them succeeding as your candidate worthy of hire.
- Timeline Management.ย Thereโs nothing worse than running a project that misses numerous milestones for one reason or another. The best way to mitigate this is to be upfront with your expectations for delivery of project milestones. This should be very clear in your job advertisement, and you should not bend on this at all when making your hire. By being well-organized and providing a clear framework for the project, which may include external elements relevant to the freelancers role on the project, youโll be ensuring that your freelance project runs on time and to schedule.
- Previous Experience.ย If you can find a freelancer whoโs worked in your industry, or has done a comparable job, this can go a long way. Because the freelancer has already completed a job of similar nature, they will most likely be able to produce your work in a speedy and more developed state based on having already completed a โtrial runโ. This can really help to narrow your search for a truly suitable freelancer.
- Payment Terms Must Be Reasonable.ย Project milestones are more than reasonable, especially if the project is lengthy, but to ask for payment prior to starting work rings alarm bells. For a longer-term project, two or three milestones is a common scenario. This is something I believe works well, as it rewards the freelancer for the work they have done, and signals the next stage of work to come.
Working with freelancers isnโt for everybody. Some entrepreneurs prefer working with people directly, in a more hands-on fashion in an office environment. But if youโre a startup, thereโs no reason why you shouldnโt leverage the opportunities this industry lays out for you.
