perspective

Entrepreneurs pride themselves on being able to handle multiple issues at the same time. But is this something we should be proud or something to change. Doesn’t a well-run organization of any kind know what its priorities are and then allocated its scarce resources to those priorities. Put another way – doesn’t every organization – whether it be a one man show or a Fortune 50 company – have more to do than it has time?

As entrepreneurs, for some reason we think it is a strength to juggle all the balls. But perhaps we should be setting priorities, choosing which balls to juggle, and which balls are more important than others. Take some time to think of your top 3 priorities and then dedicate time and effort to those. Set up regular meetings, bring your best thought and advisors to address these issues, and create a regular process to stay on track. Don’t ignore everything else – but just put less effort and priority around them. Start with 10 priorities, and then boil it down to 5 and then to 3. And for the three make sure that you are creating holes where you want them, and not just plugging the holes as they come.
