Entrepreneurs live in a constant state of hole plugging. It seems that everything needs to be done at once, but you lack the financial and human resources to get it done. Unfortunately, thatโs the nature of the beast. Prioritizing is the key to remaining productive. This chaotic state can get overwhelming unless you manage the overlapping tasks that are demanding to get done.
Setting priorities is a fundamental step in the entrepreneurial process. However, entrepreneurs often dismiss prioritizing as impractical and unrealistic. They scoff and say โWe canโt set priorities when everything needs to get done.โ This perspective, while understandable, prevents entrepreneurs from making meaningful progress. It becomes a game of Whack-A-Mole, with you focused on taking a hammer to the next issue rearing its ugly head instead of implementing a focused strategy.

Think about it. Every business, whether itโs Coca-Cola or a new startup, has more to do than they have time for. Everyone has to figure out what comes first, second, third, or what canโt be done. Would anyone from corporate America have a job if they had a โwe need to do everythingโ mentality? Entrepreneurs fail to see this.
With limited resources, you must decide your organizationโs top priorities and then align your available resources to them. Does that mean that you neglect the rest of your business? Of course not. It means that when you set your priorities, you treat them distinctly and with more focus and energy than other activities. In order to make progress, these top priorities require your best thought. Never underestimate the benefit of prioritizing. It could be the difference between success and failure.
