We have all had friends and family say to us, “you need to get some sleep.” Our immediate reaction is “who has time to sleep – we are trying to create a business here and we have a million things to do.” As entrepreneurs, it seems like foregoing sleep is not only a necessity but a badge of honor that comes with the title “entrepreneur.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

It seems like foregoing sleep is not only a necessity but a badge of honor that comes with the title “entrepreneur.”

We all know that sleep is essential to productivity. And yet as entrepreneurs we accept (and sometimes embrace) that sleep is a novelty reserved for mere mortals. But would you ever hire anyone that said in their interview, “I have a tough time sleeping.” Wouldn’t you say to yourself, if they cannot manage their sleep, what makes me think they will be able to manage the rigors of the day.  Sleep is like any other skill – product development, marketing, sales – it is a skill that must be developed. Try this – take a quick 30 minute nap in the middle of the day and one day a week get a full eight hours. And soon you will be able to put sleeping on your resume as a skill.
